I feel like my biggest issue either finding a good location on the map for my ideas or making an area fit my vision with regards to the available buildings available in the editor (how I wish I could make missions in zeus)

You can with mcc.

It's a bit intimidating but all you need is the button for 3D editor where you can become ZEUS and then "export all" to SQM.

Also, there's an addon that makes all buildings available to be placed in the editor, check the "helpful stuff" sticky.
My ARMA3 Missions - to download select a branch and pick "Download ZIP".

Yeah MCC is really good. I used it do place all the stuff in my missions. Create an empty mission, place all the stuff and just merge it with the F3 template.
