Ambush at Topolka (#1)
Comrade Headspace's plan centred on taking out the main armour elements with satchels, and then engaging softer targets from positions west of the road (ensuring we would not be cut off from our planned line of retreat). Unfortunately, we didn't manage to destroy the armour with our opening blasts. The ensuing firefight pitted us (infantry) against a BMP2 and a T72, exchanging fire across the valley. There could be only one outcome.
Ambush at Topolka (#2)
Comrade General Carver's plan still required us to use satchels against the armour, but shifted us to the slopes east of the road (with MAT and AR elements in positions to the north with a good view down the road). This time we had more success, knocking out the armour within the first minute. However, the job of mopping up the remainder of the convoy still took its toll, and it was a reduced force of 6-7 that eventually began to climb the hill to east with plans to intercept the enemy counter-attack. From the spectator script (I bought it during the ambush), I watched our team pass (and completely miss) an enemy squad coming down the densely wooded slope at a distance of some 50m. The enemy troops pushed on equally unaware, but a second such encounter further up the slope ended with a prolongued exchange of fire. Carver's merry band was further diminished, but skillfully used high ground to inflict greater casualties on the enemy before disengaging and following a mountain road south. Eventually they made it back to the dam (though harrassed for much of their journey). We called it there, and I'd say it was a success overall.
Cocktails
Igor, commanding us officer cadets, sent the majority of the force along the wadi, with plans to enter the compound at the guardhouse. Meanwhile Housemaster and (I think) Watooce were sent off with the mighty tripod, to suppress the villa from the west. Oh, and they had a KORD too. The assaulting element made a rushed entrance through the guardhouse back gate, and were immediately engaged. I shot and injured an EI as I entered, and later had the opportunity to execute him as he lay writhing on the ground. However, Igor was injured and I couldn't reach him, even with help from G. One of our foes, comrade General Carver, had got into an awesome position in a ditch by a wall, and soon G was injured beyond help. I administered the coup de grace, and continued the assault alone. I was cut down before I could get anywere near the villa.
River Assault
After setting up on the big hill, comrade General Carver had comrade Mort use the mortar on a variety of targets whilst our 'assault force' mounted up in the M113 and prepared for some extreme driving (comrade Housemaster was at the controls). Comrade Mort proved remarkably adept with the mortar, so we were filled with confidence as we bounced down the mountainside and forded the river. It was even cooler when comrade Mort's final mortar round exploded mere metres from our assualting force, decimating a group of EI in front of us. However, it would have been cooler still had it happened
before the enemy AT incinerated our battle taxi and many of our number. Despite covering fire from Carver's BRDM on the mountain, pretty soon I found myself bleeding to death and prone next to an equally messed-up Mason. Comrades Carver and Mort drove the BRDM (
extremely) down the mountain, splashed across the river, and attempted a rescue. To no avail. From the spectator script I watched an AT round blow a wheel off the parked BRDM. Ouch.
Mail Man
We played this just to prove that last week's victory wasnt' a fluke. It
was a fluke.
Having said that, we did manage to win in the technical sense. With three fireteams on the ground, mine (Charlie) occupied the houses south-east of the crash site and engaged enemies coming in from the east. We did pretty well, but I got carried away outside the house and soon found myself wounded. Poor Bob (my medic) was in his first session, and wasn't able to get to me in time. Meanwhile, the enemy were assaulting in such numbers from the north (down the valley), that Tigershark's waiting Huey had to take off without passengers or risk becoming a wreck on the ground. What followed should have been accompanied by some Samuel Barber, as the survivors on the ground first attempted to hold the houses where Charlie had been based, and then set off on a treck to the east. It was epic, especially as Tigershark fought to get his damaged bird through the valleys whilst under punishing fire from enemy MGs high on the mountains. Eventually a new LZ was made on the ridge far to the east and we called the mission when it was obvious that the survivors would reach it safely. So, actually, nicely done!
