Missions:
  • Bedtime
  • Vintage 01
  • Vintage 02
  • Hunt for Azim
  • Strife Valley LE
  • Swept LE (#1)
  • Swept LE (#2)
Wonderful to see some new faces to folk (Rho, Banshee), a returning face (Xiathorn), and Shay from MARSOC (who joined us for the last two missions). Thank you to everyone who came along. This was also our first regular session with TS3, courtesy of our good friends at MARSOC. We averaged 8-10 guests per mission, which I hope you'll agree really brought things alive. I know I had a lot of fun, and we managed to run over by at least an hour, which is always a good sign. Hopefully we can do this again next week!

I'll post some AARs later, and I think Tigershark has some footage to share. However, with DM's comment from the What's next? thread very much in mind, please don't feel you need to post to the AAR thread unless you want to. That said, any feedback is always welcome. Even if it's to say you're deeply uncomfortable with sharing a bunker with Tigershark. I know I am.

Bedtime, for some reason I ended up on my desktop with all sounds in game... and even managed to fire a shot... without any idea what I was aimed at... wish that could have lasted longer

Hunt for Azim reminds me of the old Serial Killer mission for OFP... I can see many different ways to play that one out as Azim

I liked being the driver for Rho went he ended up finishing that one mission by killing the officer... I think the teamwork and planning did well for the most part on that mission... I think at least partial credit for his kills should be mine... I did my best to spot and point the enemies out by zooming my view forward and scanning my limited area of view for enemy movement... I also blew up the 2nd truck at the artillery location (after Fer planted satchels and then was subsequently killed) with an RPG...

It was a fun session.... I had a blast... wish I had stayed for the rest of the fun after I left...

Standing next to Bravo's technical, there was definitely some good teamwork there - I would hear WolfFlight calling out targets, and watch Rho waste them. Usually, technicals are death-traps, but the way they were using in that mission was excellent.

BTW, I was shot juuuuuust as I was about to detonate my satchel charges! Grrr. :argh:

Here is Fer's "Double Rainbow" moment....

Helo Flyover

And Rho's victory moment:

Unfortunately I didn't get Fer's gay candid moment where he talk about loving when they come over him.

Really enjoyed the evening guys, I was as shocked as you all were when I actually completed a mission haha!

Looking forward to the next one..

RE the mission "Hunt for Azim" my only thinking was a peridoic update on approx location posted to the BLUFOR forces which could be gleemed as intel from locals.. When I observed whoever plays Azim could basiclaly hide inside a bush for the duration and would be borderline impossible to find..

Yeah I considered that before, but thought OPFOR might have it too easy with that and the chopper and a thermal scope. I'll look into it again - now that we've actually played it!

Bedtime

We've actually beaten this one before, but every time since I've wondered if I dreamt that outcome (and if so, why was Tigershark in my dream?!). Sadly, our angel on the hill (WolfFlight) effectively CTD'd early on, and it wasn't long before only mort, DM and myself remained, holed-up in the mosque compound. That said, DM had fulfilled his wish of blowing up the UAZ with a satchel, so it wasn't all bad. We began defending our little area, with DM and mort covering the entry points and me up in the minuret pouring (rather ineffective) fire onto the attackers below. It was all a bit medieval castle defence - all I was missing was some boiling oil! We were actually holding out reasonably well, but more guests were beginning to arrive so I called it.

Vintage 01

Bravely, we let our AI allies go in first, and then followed, moving first to the relative safety of the village. Splitting our band into two, I sent Banshee's Alpha fireteam ahead to the bunker by the road with instructions to clear it, and then to wait for the rest of us to get into position on the southern hill before collectively engaging the command post. Banshee led his guys effectively, and were ready to open up on the command post long before Headspace, DM and me were in position (on our way to the hill we got distracted by a shiny tank, and then by being shot). Finally, we got into position and began firing on enemy troops clustered around the trees behind the command post.

What happened next wasn't totally clear to me, but as Headspace and I moved into the compound from the south I saw a sustained stream of MG tracers heading in the direction of Alpha's attack. I suspect it came from the final bunker, and that it accounted for Alpha, because comms was rather quiet thereafter. Carefully, Headspace cleared the compound, but I lost him for a moment - only to find him dead just beyond the eastern-most wall. As I knelt to check he wasn't just injured, I was shredded! From death, I watched in horror as DM sucumbed to the same fate; my guess is that the final bunker had mounted a heroic defence against us.

:suicide:

Vintage 02

Our positions were the usual suspects: the low walls north of the compound, the big rock, and the compound itself (although strangely Housemaster didn't want to go up on his roof this time). Though we lost a handful of men, the enemy attack seemed pretty half-hearted. We could hear armour roving about in the valley below, and braced for its onslaught at any moment; yet nothing crested, and soon we began to wonder if we should go over to the offensive.

From the low wall, where I had been keeping mort company, I sauntered over to the rock, thinking that I might peek over the edge. Instantly, I was pinned by enemy fire and wounded shortly after. To my horror, through my blurry red vision I saw a tank lumbering up the road and turning towards me. Then flames as mort fired 2 RPGs at the metal beast (it exploded when the second grenade hit). However, my joy was rather short-lived, because against the flames something didn't seem quite right: the outline was of a T-34, and that meant we managed to kill a friendly tank.

:fry:

Housemaster appeared and carried me to safety, patched me up, and we all went forward again, hoping to renew the attack. Just beyond the crest the enemy were waiting in force, and soon we were all either cut down or injured beyond hope. The last thing I remember was throwing a grenade at a man standing mere feet from me, and hoping that I'd at least take him with me. However, I take if from the laughter in the dead channel that I was shredded before the grenade could leave my hand!

Hunt for Azim

Cracking first run through of this new mission from Housemaster. Azim was played gamely by Tigershark, whilst the Takistani Army detachment (read: everyone else) was commanded by Headspace.

Loading up into two UAZs, we took the road to the first village, stopping just outside to run a two-fireteam sweep through the buildings. Above us hovered banshee's helicopter, with with our sniper, DM, acting as temporary door gunner and spotter. Almost at once we engaged and destroyed a small group of militants at the main intersection: Alpha hit them straight on, whilst my own two-man fireteam (Bravo) was able to fire on them from an elevated position on our right flank. It was a short and one-sided firefight, and no sooner was it over that WolfFlight spotted what he thought was Azim, leaning (as only human-controlled entities do) over by a road junction further up the valley.

Alpha raced along the valley floor towards the junction, whilst WolfFlight and I took a high-ground route to the right. banshee was sweeping the valley in his helicopter, but militants at the junction were now putting rounds into the belly of his bird. I can't be sure, but I think that it was at this moment that DM took a fatal round, though it would be a while before we knew that. From a hillside position we assisted Alpha with contact reports and fire, and soon the junction was cleared. However, Azim was nowhere to be found. Guessing that he might have doubled-back to the first village, we returned and began to search buildings. Meanwhile, banshee flew through the pass, extending his search towards the second village.

It was whilst we were fruitlessly clearing individual buildings that we heard the chopper go down, prompting a rapid change of plan. Alpha found its UAZ first and raced off into the pass, WolfFlight and myself following a minute behind. It was possibly a fatal minute, because Alpha appeared to run straight into an ambush: by the time WolfFlight and I arrived only Headspace remained alive, and I was forced to kill at least 2 militants who were barely feet from him! We patched Headspace up and moved out to investigate the wreck of banshee's helicopter, but the mission timer had run out. Azim had outsmarted the army (and probably not for the last time).

Great mission from Housemaster, and well done to Tigershark. Minor point, but it was kind of nice to have a lumbering Russian-built helicopter on our side too!

More to follow tomorrow ...

Strife Valley LE

As it turned out, this was to be a mission of several firsts. To begin with, it probably helped that this was banshee's first folk session, so it was unlikely that he would know anything about the terrible massacre that had occured the first time we tried this mission's original, tougher, version. Still, he bravely accepted the challenge to command, setting out a comprehensive plan that would see us attack from the east and north.

With Housemaster as my trusty rocket-carrier, I took my Dragon launcher off to join Bravo high on the ridge that marks the southern boundary of the valley in which our targets lay. Once the rest of the platoon was in position, we all opened up. From this distance, our AKS-74Us were almost useless, but WolfFlight (driving) and Rho (gunning) had turned into a very effective crew for their technical. Frankly, for great periods I just sat and watched them mow down the EI in the compounds below. Soon the radar tower was being demolished by Headspace, and banshee ordered us to join the rest of the force on the valley floor. It was as we were doing this that we spotted enemy foot-mobiles and at least one UAZ on the road to the west, heading towards us. Fire from our technicals made short work of them all, and it wasn't long before Housemaster and I were scavanging rifles from their still-warm bodies.

By now, banshee had called on us to move on the objective in the factory complex. Headspace and WolfFlight's fireteams (respectively on foot and in a technical) were soon engaged at the factory perimeter, but as Housemaster and I neared it we realised that banshee and Tigershark were gone. Worse was to come, as Housemaster was taken out just before we reached cover, and so by the time I hooked up with Headspace in the compound, I was alone. Thereafter it became slightly confusing, with Rho reporting contacts back towards the road from where we'd come, and confusion about what to do next. As next in line, Headspace took command and we attempted to finish the job at the factory. Laying a satchel charge under the target vehicle, I retreated to what I thought was cover to detonate my charge, and was shot in the head as I brought up the action menu.

:siiigh:

From death we watched as Headspace, Rho and WolfFlight fought off some plucky EI at the factory, before locating banshee and Tigershark's technical and setting off for the last objective. After literally running-over a foot patrol, the three came upon a small cluster of houses in which a further group of EIs was sheltering. In the ensuing firefight WolfFlight and Headpsace were killed, but Rho emerged victorious (if now alone). Flexing our rules about the dead a little, the mysterious Folk UAV advised Rho to head for the final objective, fully expecting him to die heroically. As documented in the short video Tigershark posted earlier, Rho completed the mission (a first for us). Far too competent a performance for someone in their first ever folk session!

The cowards deserved to die for running away from the enemy in their invincible T34!

Swept LE (#1)

Poor old DM had been having a run of bad luck, often dying before he could do any shooting; so we suggested he took the role of commander. Our thinking was that by hanging back and giving orders, he might live long enough to at last use his rifle. It was a cunning plan, and it actually worked! DM's own plan was as follows: just west of our starting position, Alpha would occupy buildings to the north of the main road, whilst Bravo (which I led) did the same south of it. Then we waited for the enemy's sweeping force to walk obligingly into our sights. DM's thinking was that we could do enough damage to stall the sweepers, fall back to positions further west.

Finding a flat roof for my RPK-74 (as AR, I led Bravo because we had no FTL), I sent mort to another rooftop to cover the meadow to our south, and Rho to a low wall in front of me. Soon after the enemy helicopters passed over us, the black-turbaned special forces troops appeared down the road and we opened up. To begin with, things went well, but the weight of enemy numbers began to take its toll on us. As the enemy began to flank us through the meadow, DM gave the order to wthdraw. Sadly, Rho was dead, but mort was ready to pull back. I ran downstairs to join him, but never made it to the door - I was shot through a window and died instantly.

Interestingly, for this mission (and the next) we were joined by MARSOC's shay_gman. It was great to have him along for the ride, and a lovely way to demonstrate how using MARSOC's TS3 server should help us get to know them better (we have another joint session planned for Sunday 7th November).

Swept LE (#2)

Having failed in the previous attempt, we decided to have another go. Once again, DM commanded, and his plan was again to set up a defensive line that straddled the main road. However, this time we had taken different slots, greatly increasing the number of RPK-74s and adding a PKM to our arsenal. We also moved our line further west, so that a killing ground of open space lay between us and the sweeping force. I found a great spot for my PKM in a doorway that led onto a flat roof, walls shielding me from three sides whilst the barrel of my weapon pointed down the road. We were ready to massacre the enemy.

:hist101:

Sadly, the enemy had different plans.

:fry:

There must have been a good party on the other side of town, because the sweeping force never reached us. We waited patiently for a while, before DM opted to turn his attention to punching through the blocking forces. Leaving me behind as a rearguard, everyone else turned 180 degrees and began our attack (beginning with some EI high up on a ridge to the north-west). I can't say for sure what happened, because I was still facing west and listening to the comms. But by the time I was called forward only DM and shay_gman remained, creeping forward on northern side of the valley.

When shay_gman and myself reached the bodies of the EI on the ridge, we realised we were level with at least a squad of EI in the meadow to the south of the main road. Whilst preparing to fire on them, something further up the valley (to the west) got the jump on us. I took out several men in the meadow, but failed to reach hard cover in time. The others lasted only a little longer.
