Hi Folks,
Been talking with Fer about server settings and realism.
I suggested we might want to up the ante a little and enable only iron sights on the server (ie. no crosshairs for your gun when you aren't viewing through sights).
There are pros and cons for each but we'd like to hear from you guys.

Server settings - Iron sights only?

Sticking feathers up your ass does not make you a chicken.
Re: Server settings - Iron sights only?
I can play with or without crosshairs, but personally for me "with" is better, because it is easier to orient using trackir.
Re: Server settings - Iron sights only?
I don't agree that limiting the view to iron sights only is "more real". In real life you have two eyes and more peripheral vision than ArmA offers. Also when crosshairs are off, you can't shoot without bringing up iron sights with any degree of accuracy and that isn't true for real life either.
In ST we keep crosshairs on for that reason. I think it is a matter of preference/difficulty level rather than realism.

I would strongly prefer crosshairs to be on - especially with my crap eye sight and with playing on a laptop
Re: Server settings - Iron sights only?
Personally, I like to use the ironsights when shooting at medium to long ranges - but in CQB situations I think Headspace has a valid point: the POV offered by the ironsights tends to give you tunnel vision, and I've never been convinced that it's reaslistic in terms of situational awareness. The other situations in which ironsights can be frustrating are when you're using a UGL like the GP-25, or an MMG: the 'ladder' crosshair makes UGLs usable, and with MMGs having a crosshair allows you to set up cones of fire - instead of being fixated on aiming the weapon like a rifle.
The other perspective (ho ho) that's worth mentioning is this: a big part of the folk remit is providing for guests who don't necessarily play for many hours each week. My assumption is that whilst the sessions don't need to be Fisher-Price, a few playing aides (e.g. weapon crosshairs) might make the difference between challenging and frustrating. Still, that's only an assumption - please chime in with your thoughts. The sessions are only as good as the guests make 'em!

Re: Server settings - Iron sights only?
I'm pretty much in favour of keeping crosshairs _most of the time_. There's actually a lot we can do with varying difficulty settings, especially if we ever considered doing adversarial missions. In general, however, the lack of crosshairs causes me severe headaches when dealing with my TrackIR.

Gents. The Folks have spoken. Crosshairs stay on until such time as we want to increase the challenge for us. And let's face it. That's a while of given Sunday's performance
