Greetings all,
I have been thinking about creating some wilderness survival kits with the final cost coming in around $25 (US dollars). I have discussed the idea for sometime and I wanted to see what items you guys think should be in a small survival kit. I do not want to put any poduct ideas into anyone heads rather just tell me the things that you would like to have in a wilderness survival kit.
Your feedback would be helpful in designing my product.
Regards,

Re: Requesting your feedback on a survival kit
Hi Tango, as we've chatted about before, I'd suggest adding a shemagh-style garment to the kit. Not only can it be used as various configurations of headgear, but there are secondary uses: slings, load-carrier, basic filtrartion etc. The other thought I had was this: instead of printing your instructions on laminated cards, could you print onto a shemagh-style garment? Other item I'd consider is non-lubricated condoms, since they can be used to create pretty decent water containers (no kidding).

Interesting idea to place the instructions on cloth which is similiar to WW II map on silk. I will see what what the raw instructions whill be and then worry about the actual packaging. It is funny how you bring up the old condom trick for water and when I was a kid I had condoms in my kit. The problem was that in the boy scouts it became the talk of the town when I pulled out a condom to fill with water. I think every parent in the VA area boy scouts had something to say about it. The idea and concept is sound but in certain circles there is a little issue with it (mostly children).
I have also been reading a lot about shemaghs and the color choices. There is some debate in the US forums about people willing to wear one due to the previous issues with 9/11. I know it is stupid topic as well and I would say that 90% of the people could care less, but I am still trying to determine if the 10% is a large portion of my potential customers.
I have posted quite a few forum topics simliar to this one on differant sites (i.e. survival sites, backpackers, boy scouts, etc) and I will say that the survivalist types are often sarcastic in the responses. For example one guy wrote:

I think the survivalist market chall be left alone to allow them the opportunity to build their own kits. Here is my list, and if you come up with it I'll buy a few :
1) Beer
2) Women
3) more beer
4) more women
=) let me know how that kit comes along
