BTW, what would cause the weapon to explode like that?

Most likely a coincidence of variable ammo quality and a chamber/receiver with brittle fractures (poor QC in the factory). Maybe made in China (their AK copies are carp) or perhaps one of the 'home made' AK copies from Peshawar area in Pakistan (most likely the latter as it didn't look like a genuine Russian/Soviet AK to me).
Shame the twat survived he was very lucky.
