Missions:
  • Viewpoint
  • Dorres (small)
  • Poncho
  • Soviet Activity II
Many thanks to Aqarius, Boberro, Bodge, Bormanov, BrightCandle, Halop, Kefirz, Palm and Wolf for making it to the session. We weren't quite a full squad, but making it into double figures was great, and even made it possible for us to play a small adversarial. For those of us who organise the sessions and servers, or write missions, it's a very motivating situation when the numbers are good (but equally, if there's something we're doing that's putting you off attending, please let us know so we can try and address it).

We began with Teizan's frenetic defence mission, Viewpoint, under the command of corrupt mainlander politician Aqarius. Teizan, if you're reading this, would it be possible to give us 1-2 more minutes set-up time? Unfortunately, I had no Arma sound during this mission and died very early on whilst trying to single-handedly set up a Metis launcher on the north road. After I re-connected, only two players were still alive: Aqarius was bleeding out in a rocky crevice, and Palm was spewing bullets at the southern enemies. Until he wasn't.

:commissar:

Next up, our military advisers from Charlie Foxtrot led us in an adversarial, Dorres (small). The terrain Teizan has selected for this mission is superb, with an almost bocage-like selection of hedgerows with added rocks, and even two burnt-out tanks on the narrow lane. Wolfenswan would be proud to roll a company of SD troops through this place. Unfortunately, Wolf only had 5 (including him), to take on BrightCandle's force of 4 - but still went on the attack. Things began with us trading GP rounds with invisible foes (atmospheric!), and then escalated to the trading of bullets as we strained to spot each other in the mist (I was killed by Wolf as I stepped out from my rock to fire at Halop's muzzle-flashes for too long). With myself and BrightCandle dead, things were going well for Wolf's team, and two of them (Wolf and Aquarius) advanced up the centre. Unfortunately, just as they neared our compound, Palm appeared at a gap in the wall and emptied a box of MG rounds into them both.

Now the tables had turned, with only Halop left on the attacking side. However, Halop had figured out Snake Pliskefirz was sniping from the corner, and he advanced towards that location. Just at this moment, Snake Pliskefirz (for reasonsknown only to him) decided to crawl down the hedgerow. Halop arrived at Snake's former position, turned to see the back of the erstwhile sniper, and executed him with a spray from his RPK. So then it was just Halop and Palm. These guys essentially traded places - Halop going north-south, Palm the opposite - shooting at but not killing each other along the way. At one stage, Halop was even close enough to lob a hand grenade at Palm, who was just far enough from the explosion to survive. Palm continued to crawl up the hedgerow, whilst Halop reached our tallest building and sought to use elevation to locate his prey. However, when this didn't work Halop returned to the ground and began retracing his steps. Finally, the two saw each other, but Palm was mi-way through changing the box mag on his MG ...

:commissar:

Afterwards we went to Chernarus for my new mission, Poncho, which saw us cos-play US Marines from the 1980s. There was a lot of rain, but most people had awesome ponchos on. So there was that. Our mission had been to infiltrate a coastal village and destroy a Shilka, and our leader, Snake Boberro (with eyepatch), made all elements do the conga until we were on a thickly wooded hillside to the north-west of the village. Bobbero didn't want to get into long-range LAW-lobbing vs. the Shilka's 4 barrels, so he ordered A1 and ENG (me and Palm) to creep down to the village and try to make it to the docks, where we would lay mines and blow things up. Aqarius was all "But what about that patrol?" and Boberro was all "Sneak harder!". So naturally we got bounced 30 seconds into this next phase of the plan and 60 seconds after that everyone was on the hillside, dead or bleeding out. Everyone except Palm, who over the radio was heard to say: "I got this ..."

:commissar:

Our final failure mission was also new: Teizan's Soviet Activity II. Our numbers meant Snake Kefirzskin only had one Bradley and 6 dismounts to command (plus a medic, me), but he bravely advanced us towards the compound anyway. With no ROE about the Bradley's cannon, our crunchies made it to a rocky outcrop by the compound relatively easily, but then things started to go wrong. On the other side of the outcrop (to the south-east?), was an orchard or wooded area through which enemy infantry was advancing. They took out many of our number on the rocks, and not even the arrival of the Bradley in the compound made a difference (especially after it exploded). In the end, I think only Palm, Halop(?) and myself remained alive. I had a frantic shoot-out with an enemy in the wood piles, but then ran out of bullets. As I ran back to the Bradley to look for the bodies of dead comrades more STANAGs, I took a round to the face.

:suicide:

Ah well, not a session covered in success, but still a lot of fun. I hope you enjoyed it too. If you have pictures (and I know some of you do), please post 'em!

Sure, I'll add some startup time to Viewpoint.

Very sad I missed this one due to sleep.

Autorifleman

I started the mission with a quick jog up the cliff to find some cover. 30 seconds later we got reports of technicals moving up the road.
Went prone, and let loose with the RPK. The gunner on the .50cal saw me and I've spent the rest of my life being pinned and screen shake everywhere. Then I assume a .50cal bullet did a lucky penetration through the rock and headshotted me. :commissar:

I have the most to write about this mission because fighting players is always more tense.
The first half of the mission was spent in a tense stalemate with nobody wanting to cross the crossroads(sorry). My job was to watch the road for any sneaky centre pushes.

As soon as I got no replies from the radio I knew it was my time to go. I went as far to my relative right as possible and had found a spent RPG on the ground so I thought this place is probably crawling with the enemy. I had to keep moving to be as unpredictable as possible - saw someone prone so I let loose full auto and quickly moved on.

Then I saw more people and took fire, I returned the favor and threw a grenade as well - assuming the guy was dead I went further to a construction site, thinking there might be someone there.

Turned out the building was a bad place for overwatch, so I started to go back to where I threw the grenade assuming they are looking for me.
Sure enough there was Palm who received an RPK burst. I was lucky he decided to reload at that very moment :zoidberg:

The ponchos were great.
All of that death - not so much.

The shilka was so far away on the pier that our only option was to try and sneak through a village of soviet soldiers. That did not turn out well unsurprisingly and I got instagibbed by a Dshkm.

There was a shack. Before collapsing it took 1 Tow missile, 30 HE shells, and an uncountable amount of MG fire.
The shack was packed full of the enemy, it was a bloodbath. CO told me to keep back and not die, but I went straight to the compound so our comrades do not die so quickly. A second before exploding in a fireball I heard Bodge my driver calmly state "RPG" :psyboom:

Wolf you OK there buddy?
