Missions:
  • Cinderella
  • Cordonbleufor #1 (MARSOC as BLUFOR)
  • Cordonbleufor #2 (folk as BLUFOR)
  • River Assault
As ever, a wonderful evening in the company of our friends from MARSOC. Thank you to all from MARSOC who came along, and to all folk comrades that made it. Special thanks to our liaison, Tigershark. Please can I ask that as many folk comrades as possible post something in this AAR thread, as we shall be sharing its contents with MARSOC at the end of the week.

Great to see you in game with us, Alias, and don't worry about the DC. I hope we'll see you in the next Sunday session, but don't forget there is also the mid-week Folk USA session, on Tuesday nights. You're one of us simple farmers, now, comrade Alias! And now for some AAR stuff:

Cinderella

- Fer
|- DeadMeat
|- Redkid
|- Redroth

The village held by BLUFOR sat on slightly higher ground than the fields around it, and we knew they had the twin advantages of NVGs and armour. Besides our trusty RPG-7s, we had two SPG9-equipped Land Rovers, but only HE rounds for them. That meant at least two good hits would be required to disable the enemy IFV (an M2A3 Bradley), and given their full array of munitions, nightvision and thermals, that felt like a tall order.

So we sought out an elevated position, eventually finding it in a cluster of low-walled compounds far to the south-east (thanks, Igor!). Slighlty ragged at first, our column of vehicles struck out east, crossing the riverbed before turning right onto the main eastern highway and following it south to the petrol station. From there we pushed gingerly north west, but did not crest our vehicles. As Bravo FTL, I had both SPG9 Land Rovers under my command, and not wanting to lose them to a TOW I dismounted and reconnoitered the route ahead on foot. Quickly, it was apparent we could push the whole force up into the cluster of compounds, and soon I was picking out firing / fall back positions for both Land Rovers.

Our PltCo, Headspace, struck out west with the main force, using treelines, standalone structures and assorted soft cover to approach the village from the south. Halfway there, the Bradley opened up, moving from position to position further south. My Land Rover began popping-up and firing HE rounds into the east side of village, hoping to suppress the enemy as our main force assaulted. Meanwhile, Headspace sent the MAT team south to hunt the Bradley, whilst I asked Redkid/Redroth (in the second Land Rover) to also seek out our armoured enemy.

When our main force had reached the edge of the village, Headspace called us forward to consolidate. Though it carried us to the village safely, our vehicle was soon combat ineffective, and I had only a single HE round left. I fired it southwards in the direction of the Bradley's tracer fire, then DM and I dismounted to join the assault. Rounding a corner I spotted a helmet bobbing up through an open window. Raise weapon, aim, fire ...

... kill your own PltCo.

:suicide:

After that, I had no option but to run at the enemy and hope for a glorious death in battle. As it was, I managed to go quite far to the west, narrowly avoided killed another friendly (sorry Redroth), and even survived long enough to watch the returning Bradley trundle past the building I was in. Then I spotted a BLUFOR soldier running in the compound outside me, so I went to the door and ineffectively emptied a magazine from my AK. He shot me in the face.

:siiigh:

But here's the cool thing: we won. Redroth (whom I had not killed moments earlier, despite by best efforts at re-decorating the room he was in with my AK), managed to drop the last remaining BLUFOR soldier still in the village. Well done to the comrades!

Cordonbleufor #1 (MARSOC as BLUFOR)

Our main force started just north-east of the city, near a bridge over the riverbed. Not knowing where the enemy would be heading for, Igor's plan was:
  • Alpha FT (under Headspace) would take the truck, reach a minuret near the north of the cordon, and use elevation to seek out BLUFOR;
  • Bravo (under Housemaster, but with Igor in tow), would RV with the helicoper at an LZ north of the city and become a QRF.
As Alpha moved towards its initial objective, exchanges of fire and an exploding M113 signalled the presence of BLUFOR almost directly in their path, and Headspace was quick to engage them. Meanwhile, Bravo and PltCo loaded into the disarmed Huey at the LZ as planned, and began to orbit westwards. Igor was plotting a new LZ in the west of the city and asking our pilot, Viper, to confirm, when disaster struck.

Somehow, the act of typing in chat caused Viper's throttle to fail, and our bird fell (gently) out of the sky. Disgracefully (for folk), we did not die in a fireball (memo to Viper: at folk we expect comrades to think BIG when making mistakes with vehicles, so next time please try and ensure there is a fireball that consumes half the platoon). Instead, we all hopped out and began running towards the city, eventually concentrating on the main mosque.

By now, Alpha had lost its FTL, and I think only Tigershark remained. Nevertheless, we believed ourselves to be closing in on the surviving members of BLUFOR at a structure one block south of the main mosque. More exchanges of fire followed (I was watching from the roof of the mosque), and at least one more M113 was destroyed by BLUFOR AT. Then it was apparent that the enemy had slipped away to our west, and thus began a chase through the shadows, main street and side streets, as we surged westward like a pack of hounds on a fox hunt. Eventually, the last survivors of that ill-fated BLUFOR group were cornered in a building, and I believe the last was cut down making a dash towards the airfield.

It's a hard, hard mission for the BLUFOR side. As the mission-maker, I look at it less as true adversarial, and more as an enhanced coop in which we (folk) played the role of slightly better AI. So this wasn't a victory for us, per se, and I thought MARSOC did well to get as far as they did. And besides, we swapped sides for the next round ...

Cinderella

I was Bravo's AT man under Fer,

After a long discussion of viable approaches to the compound, a member revealed some high ground that provided good over watch on the target area. The plan was to attack from the east using the tree cover and SPG9s(Bravo) to shell the EI's position. upon approach to the high ground Fer set out firing and fallback positions for both SPG9 units.

The attack began and me and Redkid swung round to the firing point assigned, unfortunately i could not see anything due to tree cover. Redkid repositioned us closer to Fer's position as he had a clear firing line, however a more pressing need had come through as a ruff position of the Bradley was known.....The Hunt began. Me and Redkid went racing toward the position of the Bradley, all I could see was trace fire but the trees blocking the origin. With Fer's SPG9 disabled we where reordered to return to the main force and assist with the assault. As we arrived at the main force News came in......

Headspace had been made example of to his brothers :jihad:

Given the fact that even the Plt Co was not even free from the wrath of the motherland, I press quickly into the encampment covering Fer announcing over VON i was behind him. Shortly after we went to clear a building Fer taking one side each. Little did i know the motherland was not happy with my performance and there Agent (Fer) fired warning shots. The pressure was now I needed to prove myself to the motherland!!!

On returning to the door i entered I noticed an US Army pig! crawling into our compound 2 shot later another step close to a complete cleansing for the motherland!!... retreat into the building as i herd the Bradley....bravely take a pick out of my door and BANG the Bradley comes steaming through the wall followed by one infantry unit...3 Shots... another pig down!.... the Bradley then began to run scared of the might of the motherland!!!!....unfortunately to live another day!

The internal ministry of intelligence has not cleared me to say more however as soon as clearance is given, I can reveal details for further engagements.

Cinderella

I was the MG gunner with Igor as my assistant.

We got in the lead M2 Land Rover and moved out, on the way Igor said “This is going to be great”. Unfortunately for him he only had 2 minutes left to live. We stopped our vehicle before the crest of a hill (to the south of the village the AT Land Rovers would use as cover) and dismounted while Fer went ahead to get eyes on the target. When we were ready to move I was a little too eager and started moving while Igor was trying to board the vehicle which resulted in his death :? Sorry man!

Trying to put my comrade’s death behind me I followed the command element and the AT guys through the fields towards the enemy held village. Visibility was poor from the first compound we reached, so I suggested that we moved to the next building to the east. Unfortunately what had looked like a building on the map was only a ruin in reality. Just as we were approaching the ruin the enemy Bradley opened up on us, but I don’t believe it hit any of us at that point.

The AT element then went to try to eliminate the Bradley while the command element and I assaulted the enemy village. We made it to the outside walls of the village without being detected and I set up my PKM through a gap in the wall. It wasn’t long before I saw an enemy appear through a wall deeper in the village. I fired off a burst and killed him, however this alerted the enemy to our presence and it wasn’t long before the Bradley came storming towards me. I just managed to run inside the village and took shelter in a house. After the Bradley had moved on took a position at the doorway to the house and covered the wall where I had already shot that enemy. Again, it wasn’t long before I saw movement through a gap in the wall; however, I wasn’t able to hit the enemies who were strafing back and forth across the gap. They started shooting M203s towards me as I shot my PKM at them. Neither of us had any success in hitting the other, but it was certainly tense! A well thrown grenade could have really helped me there, but alas, I had none in my inventory! I cowered in my little house, covering my little hole in the wall until the mission ended.

Cordonbleufor #2 (Folk as BLUFOR)

I was leading out little band of wannabe-escapees. Earlier in the week Fer, Tigershark and I had completed the mission with only 33.3% casualties… We did this by avoiding contact at all cost and by trying to sneak around patrols. I wanted to see if this method would work with a larger group of players.

We did well initially, despite Headspace’s best efforts at alerting the enemy  . When we were nearing the outskirts of the city an M113 came through a wall right in the middle of our formation which rather spoilt things and I was one of the first to die. If I were to try the mission again I would consider splitting the fireteams up, hoping that a fireteam would be a small enough group to avoid detection – and so if a single fireteam was detected, it would not necessarily doom the other fireteams as well.

River Assault

I was Alpha AAR, I forget who was with me, sorry!

This was the first time we’d played this new version of the mission, and under MARSOC leadership we set about completing it in a different way to how we had previously.

I really enjoyed crossing the river in the BTR-60 and moving to the first compound on the eastern bank, it felt like we could die and any moment - very exciting. I was sent onto a roof to look for enemies, but we heard the BMP-2 before we saw it. The BTR-60 had gone back to pick up more troops and had just come across the river when, from the roof, I saw a missile streak by, I turned as fast as I could, but the BTR-60 was already in flames by the time I saw it! I stayed on the roof while some of my fireteam went to help survivors in the BTR-60 (that was really awesome). We all moved from the compound to a house nearer our objective and the next time the BMP-2 came we were ready for it - ready for the vehicle itself, but woefully unprepared for its crew and passengers, and I was one of the many that died at that house. Still, it was fun to play that mission with that player count!

Thanks to the organisers of the event and to the MARSOC guys who were all cool dudes.
