[Sat] 27 May 2017 (Lucky Thirteen)

Missions:
  • Busca I
  • Net Inventory
  • Swept Zero
  • Lightpool
  • Cholo 2017
  • Jolly Green Hell
  • Guardians I
  • Su casa es mi casa
A vintage session with several firsts. We hit thirteen players for the first time since the Republic broke with the mainland, with shows from regular islanders Boberro, Bodge, Bormanov, Commander Tasun, Costno, egg, Halop, harakka, Tigershark and washington. Returning from the land of the fascists, head made an appearance too. And finally new face, Cannigan, helped push us over the line of having too many players for a mission! Thank you to everyone who came along - you helped to make last night the closest session yet to our vision for the Republic!

:v:

We were due to start with washington's latest, Net Inventory, but found to our surprise that its 12 slots wouldn't accommodate our numbers. So we kicked off with another new mission, Busca I, with Commander Tasun in command (and wielding a UAV). The CO's plan was a simply pincer, each fireteam using the jungle to advance parallel to the road before swinging in towards the roadhouse complex. We weren't quite as stealth as we'd wanted to be, and took casualties in the initial firefight - but Bodge's FT soon overran the hotel. There was a moment when people weren't sure about shooting the unarmed narco-politicians ... but we got over that and liquidated them. As harakka later remarked: from a distance, you can't tell if they're holding a gun or not so it doesn't matter. Unfortunately, some (me) took this lack of target-checking a bit too far and poor Boberro was shot and killed whilst providing overwatch for his FT from the hotel balcony. Oops.

Washington, who had died early in the first mission, had quickly expanded Net Inventory, which turned out to be an awesome mission of killing pigs and sling-loading pallets of cocaine. On one of the smaller Tanoan islands, we (the cowboys) assembled, looking like extras from Far Cry 5 (only without a trailing contingent of butt-hurt RPS churnalists), and immediately set off in trucks for a nearby town. Under Bodge's command, our three fireteams swept north-south until eventually the cops were killed and the cocaine secured. Sadly, both Boberro and myself were killed by sneaky cops hiding in a building, but I think the rest of our gang survived. Afterwards, Bodge led an attack on a second little garrison near some gas storage containers. Following a little conference at a tree, his force split off into two and executed a perfect BOF+flank attack which left many blue bodies on the ground and Tasun flying off into the sunset with a pallet of coke swinging under his LB.

:clint:

Now to Takistan, for valley corridor shooter Swept Zero with washington in charge. Bodge's FT would move along the road, Head's FT would take the southern route through some compounds, whilst Tigershark provided top cover for all of us with his big gun sniper rifle. And you know what? It went pretty damn swimmingly, except I think Bodge killed one of his own men at one point. In the other FT, we gave head shit for having a fascistic symbol on his arm (though we admit the 1Tac logo looks neat in-game). In return, head made egg and me clear all the buildings whilst the rest of the FT looked on. Finally, the surviving members of the squad assembled for a picture on the outskirts of Chaman. We were Afgansty, and we were awesome.

So, Lightpool is cursed. head was our leader (because he has a JLR in his tag, which means he's more qualified than all of us ;) ), and with some advice from the mission maker, set up a nice ambush next to the inlet. Unfortunately, someone poked their head out at the wrong time and the convoy noticed - enemy troops de-bussing long before the vehicles neared our explosives. What happened next is hard to explain: I was on the balcony of a building further up the road (beyond the inlet) and all I could see was huge armoured vehicles and strings of marines moving about like ... well .... it all went a bit like this:

One of the MAT teams did managed to kill the two self-propelled artillery pieces. So that's a win (and another first for us, as that mission hasn't been won before).

:hist101:

Speaking of wins, there's Cholo 2017 was a positive massacre. Boberro drove the gang bangers right up to the pig factory and we all pilled out. But Ethan Hawke and Mobius head, Cannigan and Commander Tasun were waiting for us with shotguns. Half our number died out in the open, and though a few (harakka and Tigershark?) made it into the building, they were executed one by one.

:owned:

And from that massacre to another. Everything was very, very quiet in Jolly Green Hell. Sure, we'd been in a helicopter crash, but after that it was just a quiet stroll through the jungle, down a path, then a track and finally to a road with a sign. washington called the chopper, which was already nearby. head set the bird down and we climbed aboard, and as it pulled away our thoughts turned to--OH MY FUCKING GOD WHERE ARE ALL THOSE BULLETS COMING FROM OH FUCK WE'RE LOSING HEIGHT FUCK FUCK THE PILOT'S HEAD IS MISSING FU--

:commissar:

Our session's epilogue was Guardians I, in which we proved that bolt-action rifles and battle cries can beat Soviet automatic weapons if you work together. But also that not checking carefully as you advance can cause you to leave enemy survivors to your rear. Armed enemy survivors.

;)

Like I said, vintage session. See you, space cowboy.

:v:

PS Boberro is right - we also played Su casa es mi casa. Landing south of the villa, Tiger and Tasun set up to ambush the cops if they attempted to drive in from town (they did), whilst the rest of us stormed the guardhouse. Pretty soon we were at the main entrance, and in a flash (well, quite a lot of muzzle flashes), the villa was ours!

Last night was fun! Thanks one and all :)

I got capped really quick in Busca I. Next time, I hope to train my rifle on some corrupt narco politicians. That is a good spot for an assault, so can't wait to play it again!

It was good to play Net Inventory because I was unsure of how it'd work. The concept was smaller teams acting independently, with a pick-up as a reward for each cleared location. Reviewing it now, however, I'm not too sure about it. Might need to limit scope and just have more of a streamlined, simple assault. Also involving the rotary winged asset more would be a win. I'll gladly take suggestions!

Very happy with how Swept Zero turned out! I acted SL with teamleaders Bodge and Head showcasing stellar performance. For future self, I'd go even heavier on the fireteam bounding and make sure that each advancing team should have the other team covering. Tigershark, didn't even see you go down. What happened? Missed hearing the single rounds go overhead a bit in to the mission.
Special commendation to Halop for Makaroving enemies John Wick-style :commissar:

And is it just me or is it exponentially more unnerving playing Jolly Green Hell and NOT having enemies shoot at you? It was a rather peaceful stroll in the jungle with a straight forward helo pickup. That is, until at the VERY LAST MINUTE enemies from all directions started firing like idiots. Still, counting that as a glorious win! :jihad: :jihad:

Next week!

Back to Takistan - Sidors packed and Tsoi's cassettes rewound.

Being a medic is good (if everything goes well)...

...don't need to worry about being shot...

... and can get cool camera shots like these.

Great times, thank you all! I had to exit during the start of Jolly Green because my PC decided that loading the mission should take 10 minutes, I will get my performance issues sorted for next week's Tanoa.
(That Makarov was the best thing I've ever looted from the Takistanis :psyboom: )

Since there was a risk mission would end too soon, enemy reinforcements were called. Sadly it's hard to find a good compromise between not spawning enemies on top of players and having AI get into area in time. So they finally shown up just as helicopter came to landing.

BTW there also was Su Casa es Mi Casa after Guardians.

Stuff.

Admittedly very sad the session ended before I could properly execute everyone for not including me in the picture in Swept Zero. :argh:

It's your fault for not telling us you're coming.
