Getting started with TeamSpeak 2

Post by fer » Thu Jun 17, 2010 5:01 pm

What version of TeamSpeak 2 do I need?
You'll need v2.0.33.7 of the TeamSpeak 2 client.

How do I get hold of a copy?
Visit the Downloads Archive page on the TeamSpeak website. Download the installer for v2.0.32.60 and the updated binary for v2.0.33.7

What do I do next?
Install the TeamSpeak 2 client v2.0.32.60 on your machine.

How do I upgrade to v2.0.33.7?
Navigate to your TeamSpeak 2 folder in Program Files, then copy the TeamSpeak.exe file for v2.0.33.7 over the original TeamSpeak.exe file.

How do I connect to the folk TeamSpeak 2 server?
Start TeamSpeak 2, then from the menus select: Connection > Connect

Image

A new window will appear. Right-click Servers and select Add Server

Image

A new item will appear under Servers. Rename it folk and hit enter.

Image

In the right-hand side a number of fields will appear. Use the following options:
  • Server Address: 83.68.220.189
  • Nickname: your own nick
  • Select the Anonymous option
  • Server Password: freedom
Then click on Connect

Image

If you see a window like this then congratulations, you have successfully connected to the folk TeamSpeak 2 server. There are still a few things you will want to do to complete your set-up.

Image

From the menus select: Settings > Sound Input/Output Settings

Image

A new window will appear. We strongly recommend you select the Push to talk option, and use a mouse button to activate your mic. It stops us all hearing when your toddlers begin that knife fight. When you've set things up as you want them, click Close

How do I change channels?
When you join the server you will start in the Away channel. You can move to other channels by double-clicking on them in the window. However, you might want to use keybinds, which allow you to move to specific by pressing special combinations of keys - this is really useful if you want to avoid alt-tabbing to the TeamSpeak 2 window whilst in-game (some people's PCs explode when that happens, you see).

How do I set up keybinds?
There are two ways:
  • If you don't already use TeamSpeak 2 with keybinds for other games or gaming groups, you can simply download and import the folk keybinds in a handy .kbn file.
  • Alternatively, you'll have to set up your keybinds manually, because if you import the folk keybinds they may overwrite your existing ones. More information about this topic is provided later in this guide.
Where do I get the folk.kbn file?
Download it from http://www.ferstaberinde.com/folk/downloads/folk.kbn

What do I do next?
From the menus select: Settings > Key Settings

Image

A new window will appear. Click Import. A file finder window will appear; find the folk.kbn file and click Open

Image

The folk keybinds will be imported. You can now click Close

Image

What if I want to set up the keybinds manually?
These are the settings you need to set up:
  • RIGHT ALT + Right Ctrl + INSERT - Toggle channel commander
  • ALT + NUM DECIMAL - switch to channel Secondary
  • ALT + NUM 6 - switch to channel 6
  • ALT + NUM 5 - switch to channel 5
  • ALT + NUM 4 - switch to channel 4
  • ALT + NUM 3 - switch to channel 3
  • ALT + NUM 2 - switch to channel 2
  • ALT + NUM 1 - switch to channel 1
  • ALT + NUM 0 - switch to channel Primary
  • H - whisper to chan. com. in chan. family
What if I already use some of those key combinations for other servers?
Then you should definitely set up the keybinds manually (importing the .kbn file will overwrite your existing settings). The good news is that you can have duplicate keystroke combinations, so your folk keybinds can live happily alongside your existing ones.

What's Channel Commander?
Channel Commander is a mode that allows you to talk with other players who are also using Channel Commander and are in the same family of channels as you (we have 2 families of channels on the folk TeamSpeak 2 server: Primary and Secondary).

How does it work in practice?
Imagine you're in Primary Channel 1 and have Channel Commander toggled on. Someone in Primary Channel 3 has Channel Commander toggled on as well. Usually, s/he can't hear you when you talk on TeamSpeak 2 because you're in different channels. However, if you talk on Channel Commander (push H if you are using the folk keybinds), s/he'll hear what you say.

Can anyone use Channel Commander?
Technically, yes, but in practice the following roles use it: Commander, Deputy Commander, and any FTLs who are leading a fireteam that's in its own channel. This way the leaders of each major element in the platoon can stay in touch.

Do I need anything else?
You might want to use TSO (TeamSpeak Overlay), which tells you who's talking by displaying their nick onscreen.

Where can I get a copy?
Download it from the Project TINT website at: http://www.projecttint.com/teamspeakoverlay.php

What do I do next?
Install TSO on your machine.

Great. Now what?
Start TSO. You will get a warning message, but don't worry; click OK

Image

A new window will appear. To set it up for the first time click Options

Image

A new window with multiple tabs will appear. On the General tab make sure you enter your nick exactly as you did in TeamSpeak 2.

Image

On the Displays tab you might want to use the choices illustrated below. Then click Done

Image

Well done - you've set up your options. Now, back on the main window click Enable. This is how you will start TSO normally.

Image

Notice that the Enable button greys out. Next, you can click Hide to minimise TSO to your tray.

Image

When should I start TSO normally?
After you have started Armed Assault: Operation Arrowhead and TeamSpeak 2.

Am I done now?
Yes you are. When you join the TeamSpeak 2 server before a mission begins, remember to move into the Primary channel (ALT + NUM 0 if you are using the folk keybinds).
