[Sat] 19 Aug 2017 (United Nations gets a green T-72)

Post by Kefirz » Sun Aug 20, 2017 1:38 pm

The session was kicked off with Old Fashioned, an adversarial with bolt action rifles, set in Malden 2035. After some sneaking around, the first shots were fired and both teams had a rough idea were the enemies were. Being set in an urban environment, house clearing with bolt actions just wasn't cutting it for me, so I turned to my rusty pistol and dud grenade to do the job.
It didn't do the job..... all I managed to do is get shot and while I was trying to give out enemy positions I got brutally executed :commissar:

Next up was the atmospheric UNarmed. Set in Altis and surrounded by fog, with a constant mortar barrage around us, our high speed, low drag team of UN peacekeepers/mercenaries went inside the town that looked like 1990's Grozny, to look for civilians. First died the FTL's, then the SL, and then the 2IC of FT's. After rescuing two groups of civilians, there were only 4 of us left. Since I held the mapcase rank and my medic's bag looked a bit like a mapcase, I took command of our group and set out to rescue the 3rd group of civilians. As we made our way through the rubble, we lost one more guy.
Things weren't looking very optimistic for us, but we persisted in spite of losing a comrade and having some close calls with mortars falling in compounds next to us. Soon enough, we managed to get to those civilians and rescue them, but as we were getting out of the town, I noticed orange lines on the floor and sure enough some explosions followed a few seconds later. I realized what was happening and we legged it to the evac point as fast as we could. In the end, only 3 of us survived, but the mission was successful, with acceptable causalities :jihad:

Continuing the UN theme for the session, we took up arms in UNcontested and defended our base in Shapur against a land based invasion from the North and against a Russian QRF air assault force from the South. I was driving the totally-for-peacekeeping-purposes camouflage green T-72B with ERA armor. In the mission Harakka had some doubts against shooting helicopter pilots with the tank, but I assured him that those guys in blue jumpsuits and pistols are as dangerous as a venereal disease for married men that were on a business trip to Bangkok.
Overall the mission was a success and I think we did quite well.

With our spirits high, we defended an UN humanitarian outpost in Bystrica in Kale's mission UNwelcome guests. I was an FTL in A1 and Bodge was the ASL. The plan was to have a 360 coverage of the town. My team was split between two buildings and when things got too hot the whole squad consolidated in those buildings, because there were only like 5 enterable structures in the whole town, but these two weren't spread out, so we could support each other. We were pretty effective and I think the whole squad didn't lose a man.... at least A1 didn't. All the enemies were dead, the extraction chopper was on it's way and it seemed that nothing could go wrong. Oh boy how wrong was I. When the chopper landed, the back door was open and like apes, people started to pile at the back not realizing that you can't fucking board the chopper from there. At the end someone had the bright idea to vault in the chopper, which resulted in tipping the Mi-8 and killing us all in a fiery explosion. :siiigh:

Next up was Piece of cake, made by Boberro and set in Vt5 Finland. I took the command in this one and we were supposed to clear out an industrial facility that was occupied by Russian Spetsnaz troops. Seemed simple enough, so I made plan where we would drive to the edge of the forest, disembark, go on foot to a nearby farmstead and try to get some eyes on the industrial complex. Seems simple enough, but unfortunately it was too advanced for some people as they drove into the actual industrial complex, triggered the enemies and died in seconds. I mean what the actual fuck was that Bormanov? Anyway, we went to the farmstead, enemies were already pouring out of the industrial complex and soon enough we were surrounded. We retreated to an old wooden shack, but the Russians continued to shoot us through the walls with their wallhack enabled. So I made the decision to retreat further North into the woods. For a moment, I thought we managed to disengage and get to safety, but soon enough..... they caught up to us and proceeded to murder us through the thick vegetation.
Thank you Boberro for force feeding us your PTSD cake :psypop:

We ended the session with the inaugural RPK mission, Finca I. Set in Malden 2035 and this time in the day as we went ZU hunting in three farmsteads. I was commanding the BTR and we were on overwatch and battle taxi duty. After seeing a DShKA up close and personal, nobody wanted to ride on top of the BTR :D
Anyway, the mission went quite well, we located the ZU's, the groundpounders were alive and the BTR didn't die in a fireball, so I chalked it up as an success :clint:

Full mission runlist:

- Old Fashioned
- UNarmed
- UNcontested
- UNwelcome guests
- Piece of cake
- Finca I

Today we had a total of 12 people showing up. So a big thanks to those that came (Boberro, SuicideKing, Harakka, Mr. Kat, Archie, Bodge, Thirith, Zitron, Commander Teizan, Bormanov and Pebs), I hope you had a good time and please post your screenshots, videos and comments.

Kefirz writes the best AAR posts. As much as I love being on holiday, I am sad to be missing out on Folk action. Did you edit Finca I to include RPKs? (Amusing fact: the mission was actually inspired by the place in Spain where I am currently staying).

I didn't take any notes so I can't say much on the individual missions - other than a few unconnected snippets:

  • UNarmed is a masterpiece of atmosphere - and one of those missions where spectating it is almost as enjoyable asplaying it.
  • Will we ever find out what happened to ATM Guy who never could quite decide whether he wanted to attack our intrepid survivors or get some more cash from the ATM?
  • UNwelcome Guests was pretty uneventful from my perspective, other than that wheelless armoured vehicle that wouldn't quite die and the surprise helicopter explosion at the very end.
  • UNcontested: So the guy in the blue overall that I saw running away was a legit target after all? I did feel a bit bad after shooting him in the back.
  • Piece of Cake might just be the reason why I slept badly and woke up after 5 1/2 hours with a headache. It was definitely memorable, though, in a sadistic kind of way.
Anyway, I don't often get a chance to play with you fine fellows, so thanks for a fun, exciting game and the most dubious cake since Portal.

No Fer, I only Zeused time, so we would clear those farms in the daytime. Boberro said that most/all of your missions that involve Russians have RPK's by default now, I'm guessing through the wonderful magic of TMF.

Gorka green for the win

Post by boberro » Sun Aug 20, 2017 9:14 pm

Best thing about Piece of cake was, we didn't get slauthered by groups of AI hidden in buildings. It wasn't a BTR either. It was small patrols - I checked. They were just that good camouflaged

Oh yeah, in that vegetation those Gorka suits work really well. Although next time I would like to see how it plays out in a different time, when it's brighter/darker.

Old Fashioned: Went fairly well, many Russians were executed. Some radio issues, I should have pointed out the lack of rifleman radios in the briefing and I should look into figuring out how to disable side and group chat.

UNArmed: I was Delta 1 FTL, got shot early and spent the rest of the mission seeing that mortar get so close to murdering Kefirz and watching that M2 Browning rack up the kills. 70% Casualties all in.

UNContested: As SL, I squad lead a counter attack against the enemy convoy (of which we are given perfect aerial recon) and the tank shot some BTRs. I then received a burst of Heavy Cannon To the Face. :psyboom:
There was then a lot of mopping up action that pretty much defined the whole second and third thirds of the mission; Not the most fun thing to watch or do.

UNWelcome Guests: My fancy new PKP was all shiny and new, and I took much smugness from comparing them to the rest of the Autoriflemen's rusty PKMs. I then drove off in some shoddy UAZ to loot a better UAZ with a rocket launcher on it to shoot a BRDM which had repelled everything we had thrown at it.
I then drove back and taxii'd two people to the helo, and when I was driving back to pick up the third there was an explosion behind me. Realising nobody would believe that we hadn't used the SPG on our car to cause the spontaneous detonation, we drove away at full speed to seek asylum outside of the UN.

Our experience of Piece of Cake can be summarized to "Is that a BTR?" - Teizan, "What?" - Pebs, *BTR opens fire* "What the hell Fire" - Teizan, as we all let loose in full auto, driving past the BTR into a glorious charge against an entire Company of Russians before the Engine or something Totaled and we were all massacred trying to escape the vehicle, which suffered a spontaneous detonation by RPG.
The rest of the mission was spent observing the Russians mop up the remaining British Forces, which was admittedly a little more interesting than UNContested's mop-up.

Goddamnit Bormanov.

Finca I went about the same as the last time we'd played it, not even the shiny (rusty) new (old) RPKs we had been issued managed to stave off the late-session long-mission overpowered-player based monotony.

Or admittedly, it was just that sitting around in a vehicle potting many AI with no natural predators (RPGs) present and no personal RPK to play with was pretty boring.

Fer, I know you read this. Once you're back in the HQ, UNContested needs a change: either QRF needs to go away (probably with strengthened convoy) or it needs to land closer and be more aggressive. This mission was boring during first playthrough (and people acted stupid because of that) and was boring this time. And it shouldn't be boring - it has a tank, tigersharkdamnit.

Okay - I'll find a way to make it much more of a challenge! I actually can't remember the mission - what happens in it? :psyduck:

It's not just a matter of a challenge. There's also a matter of people spending 45 minutes in spectator mode.

It's this mission on sharpur, where we make an ambush on russian convoy (since we're the UN), then few helicopters land behind us and we have to clear wrole map of enemies. And we have a tank.
