[Sun] 25 Nov 2012 (Mutual Support)

Missions:
  • BlackFolkDown
  • Red Snow
  • Ashore
  • ZigZag
In a busy period for major games releases, it was superb to see 40 comrades in the session. Thank you to everyone who made the time to come along and continue our struggle for a socialist agrarian utopia. The session itself lasted well past the 3-hour mark: the last mission, ZigZag, beginning just before 23:00 UK with 25 comrades still in play, which is always a good sign. We also had at least one new face, comrade Cuddlefish - I hope you enjoyed your introduction to our sessions.

As I mentioned at the end of Ashore, it was great to see the squads working to support each other in that mission. Perhaps more importantly, and to echo comrade Toppometer, the workshops seem to be paying real dividends as our fireteams are certainly much more cohesive affairs than before, so a big thanks to comrades Tigershark and Ferrard Carson for running those, and to all who make time to attend.

As ever, please post your thoughts, feedback, screenshots and video here (PM me for details of Folk YouTube channel). Posts in the AAR threads really helps us (the hosts and mission makers), both with understanding how we can improve the experiences, and showing potential comrades what our sessions are like.

The Party thanks you for your support (and returns to the task of burning all evidence of that raid into Zargabad, when we had to lie about rescue helicopters and leave everyone to die).

Hmmm. Was a pretty nice session to spectate... and probably the most frustrating session ever for me, as I got to shoot a total of about 7 rounds during the entire session. And they were all fired during the same second, at the same dude, after which my only target (and kill) of the session killed me by some black voodoo magic thingy upon dying himself.
It's a good thing there was the workshop before that. We fired enough bullets in that one to destroy sandbags walls! Who needs satchels, huh.

I'm waiting to head to an interview this morning so I'll write this up before I go.

Workshop - Alpha 2 FTL
Stepped up this week and took on the FTL role - I've been thinking about doing it for a while. Luckily I had a fireteam of pros in BlackMamba, Ferrard Carson, and Wolfenswan because at times I reverted back to that 'first time playing ARMA2 online OHMYGODWHATDOIDO breathing into a paper bag routine*'. Dropped myself into the deep end a little, but that's often the best way to learn and I might try it again next week. I'm a big fan of doing mission planning and execution in the workshop - that was a really good addition this week and worth doing again.

BlackFolkDown - Alpha 1 FTL
'OK, if you've been FTL in the workshop please slot as either alpha 1 or 2 FTL.' With alpha 2 FTL quickly taken, I find myself leading Alpha 1. Helo engine died but Tiger made a good crash landing any my team came out of it unharmed. We orient and move, and then squad lead dies and when someone tells me I'm now in charge it dawns on me just how high up the command hierarchy I am, and how I'm now precariously close to being CO, too :psypop: . After a few OHYGODWHATDOIDO moments akin to the workshop** I try and give it a go, quickly cementing myself as having the same kind of leadership skills as captain Smith from the book 'If I die in a combat zone'. We push up a couple hundred metres, then I take one to the face.

RedSnow - Bravo 2? AT
No HAHO deployments this time round, we form up and head into Brezino, making good progress, Carson showing me how being FTL should be done. We reach a house that seems to have 20+ bad guys on the other side. We engage, taking most of them out, and I make a (if I say so myself) pretty sweet AT shot on a zeus :coolbert: but the rocket alerts everyone to our position and we're practically pinned pretty quickly afterwards. Soon enough we try and make some room for ourselves, Strang gets taken out, and I'm dead soon after. Probably my favourite mission of the night.

Ashore - Bravo 1 AT
Bravo acted as a rearguard for the attack, so lots of tactical maneuvering ahoy. I got killed by the second bad guy I saw as I tried to sneak a look out of cover :siiigh: . Hats off to Toppo though for his command of Bravo, he did a really impressive job of keeping the squad together and efficient.

ZigZag - HMG assistant
We set up at a nice spot, command told us to look north west. We didn't see anything north west, then lots of bullets came from north west and we died.

*Didn't really breathe into a paper bag. I didn't have one to hand.
**Still no paper bag.

Black Folk Down
B3 FT: FTL Lwlooz, AR Mike, AAR Mort, AT harakka
Note: When writing this I recalled I was in A3, when in fact I was in B3. I've tried to edit the text to match reality.
One of those hot landings. The Blackhawk carrying Bravo was supposed to drop off its cargo first in the small compound in eastern Zargabad and lift off. This didn't quite happen, as hot landings against AI in ARMA2 don't necessarily see a lot of incoming fire, but what does come in is invariably very accurate. Bravo's chopper, piloted by BlackMamba, apparently went from flyable to a brick as it landed, and several of the passengers became spectators in the process. Among these was Mort, so we were only three right from the start.

The compound itself was secure enough and elements spread out quickly to secure various outlying structures. B3 was mostly holding the rear at this stage, while other Bravo elements seemed to spend a lot of time lying on the ground groaning. Eventually B3 got to take point for a while, advancing towards the mosque without any major issues. Once we got to the mosque entrance, along with some other elements, Mike ran out of ammo and went to grab a rifle from a body next to the mosque doorway. This proved to be a mistake as some unseen assailant shot Mike dead from within the mosque courtyard. Lwlooz managed to avenge Mike, but I perished soon after when I spotted another of the mosque's defenders through the main building, on the opposite side of the courtyard. He had seen me too, we fired simultaneously and both went into our separate afterlifes.

I then got to spectate remaining forces clearing the mosque, while taking surprisingly high number of casualties, grabbing the warlords, and then waiting for a rescue that would never come.

Red Snow
A3 FT: FTL harakka, saboteur Phoenix, rifleman Legs, marksman Daf
IceRaiser's plan had Alpha squad, led by Wafflynumber, HALO on a small clearing north of the main AO. Our main target would be the vehicle depot. The initial approach went very smooth as fireteams advanced in a line through the woods to the town outskirts. A3 was closest to the factory compound at the north edge of Berezino, which turned out to be guarded by four CDF soldiers. I had my men orient in a line towards the factory, pick targets and fire on my mark. The enemies fell in about a second without getting a shot off.
A3 then kept overwatch as A2, who were in position to support A3, scouted the factory compound. No further defenders were found, but as we withdrew back into the treeline, a CDF Mi-8 flew over us towards south and disgorged paratroopers to bolster the main defenses in the middle part of the town.

Meanwhile, Waffly had A1 position itself west in the treeline in order to scout out the vehicle depot. Infantry and a manned ZU-23 truck were spotted, and A2 and A3 were to move to a small mound on the northwestern edge of the town. CDF forces in town spotted us while we were on the move and engaged, but at least A3 didn't take any casualties. I ordered my guys to break contact by moving onto the opposite side of the mound, and then move back into position, ready to spot enemies and return fire.

Waffly now ordered A3 to move into the town and advance along the closest road towards the vehicle depot, while A1 would take a more direct route. We were close to the small red brick train station which seemed like a good staging point, so I had my men enter it. Daf, with his VSS, was to grab a coast-facing doorway and take out any enemies visible from that side, with Phalanx supporting him. Meanwhile I got eyes down the road, spotting a group of CDF soldiers standing on the road about 300m from us. Waffly was on the radio, hurrying A3 along so we could support the other Alpha elements in assaulting the vehicle depot, so after Daf and Phoenix had done their job, I repositioned Daf onto the roadside and the rest of us advanced along the road into engagement range.

The engagement started earlier than I had hoped as the CDF group went active when we were about 150m from them, but Daf was on the job and we helped the best we could. As we got to the group's original position we started taking sporadic gunfire from a compound to our east, across a small stretch of tall grass and bushes. We didn't have good visibility on our shooters and Waffly wanted us moving west closer to the depot, so I ordered my guys to break contact and move west, getting buildings between us and our assailants.

Unfortunately this didn't work out too well, as Phoenix got shot in quick order. I popped smoke and tried to get him back into the fight. I succeeded but took a lethal bullet myself soon after.

Mission maker comments:
The players are heavily undergunned, the advantage of darkness disappears during the mission and the enemy gets reinforced with nastier and nastier stuff as the mission progresses, so surgical precision and disengagement are key. Also even though commander has the option to spread the squads pretty wide over the AO, this isn't a necessity.
Everything considered we did pretty well here though, as there are a lot of objectives and I think only two were left when everyone was dead. I'm considering modifying the squad structure so that one fireteam would have long range firepower, another medium range and the last short range, so elements could be used in more specific roles.

My perspective of red snow, very fun and very dead!

Bravo 3's perspective of the awesome Ashore. You will see me getting all 30 of my glorious kills and ice calling hax!

Excuse me. That brick thing? Tigershark. Not me. I don't do bricks. :clint:
I was flying Bravo's chopper, the engine got shot up at the very end of the insertion, while I was hovering about 1 meter off the ground. I only realized my engine died when I tried to pull the collective to lift off, and set the bird down without (I think) casualties.

I just checked my video recording and I stand corrected. I was in Bravo 3, not Alpha 3 as I originally recalled. Mort died from incoming fire roughly half a second before the chopper touched down.

I'll be damned. So much for the whole "no casualties" thing.

We were flying really low to our insertion point and then we were fired upon. The enemy fire disabled the engine of the choppa and killed our SL. An excellent crash landing later, we regrouped and started moving towards our objective - the main mosque. Alpha was advancing very tactically, me being prone on the asphalt most of the time and spraying lead with my M60 while the fireteam advances. Also killa shooting a rocket at a pesky sniper in a minoret - oorah!

All went very well until we reached the mosque. We stacked at a wall, me being prone on the asphalt looking north. Well turns out there was a sadistically placed dishka just to our north that killed most of Alpha in a few seconds, oops.

No idea what was happening beyond the few hundred meters of my line of sight, i'm just a grunt, but it seems we didn't succeed.

Red Snow
A2
FTL SuperU
Saboteur Halop
Sniper Red Sniper
AT Adam

We advanced from the very familiar position from the north (last time I played it I attacked from completely the same angle :psyduck: ) After clearing the few enemies with no problems we headed to the vehicle depot we were supposed to destroy. Along the way A1 got massacred horribly by something, they were too far away and we didn't help them. So, we got eyes on the depot, and assaulted it. I planted some satchels and blew up the hardware. Then the T90 arrived and all went to hell. After "regrouping" at the strategic barn at the end, I managed to score one hit with an RPG, but it didn't do anything to the tank.

After that the Party ordered an immediate assault on the enemy surrounding us, composing of at least 2 full squads of infantry and a T90. I got shot while patching up a friendly.

Ashore
A2
FTL Halop
AR Kefirz
AAR Syn
AT Adam

After getting confused and disoriented at the disembark point as I always do when FTLing, We proceded to the Alpha marker. Got into a firefight near the entrance to the complex and Kefirz got killed. After avenging Kefirz, we moved to A3's position in the complex. Then Lead ordered us to climb the nearest tall building and provide overwatch for Charlie and Bravo. After staring at the fog for a few minutes, it was Alpha's turn to take the Vanguard. Adam died to enemy fire. Killed some badguys, but I got killed AGAIN by a ninja Diskha (those things are the cause of 90% of my deaths). The mission was almost over by the time I died, excellent storming of the final complex later ensured.

ZigZag
United Nations "Peacekeepers"
A2
FTL Halop
AR Fer
AAR thekev506
AT Zitron

We had an excellent spot, hiding further back and having good eyes on a strategic hill. We made first contact with the enemy and held our fire. We knew where they were, and I think they did too, because a guy was constantly staring straight at me. The enemy opened fire on A1 and we engaged. Told Fer to lay prone and pin those guys at the rocks, while we advanced west. Turns out there was a sneak squad that came from our backs and murdered us all.

I was one of the new faces! I had great fun, i'm looking forward to playing with you people again. I remember a few highlights! I remember my mine blowing up a ural truck, giving me 13 free kills on my first mission. Huzzah! Also, had great fun during ashore, seeing my squad leader being torn up by a dishka as i noped the hell out of there, leaving me as the last remaining element of A 1-2. Good fun. I'm glad you spearheaded that sprint, halop. I'm sorry i couldnt help.
